What is the difference between Psychotherapist and Counsellor? (Only Canada)

Psychotherapist:

  • Psychotherapists in Ontario are regulated health professionals registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
  • They have completed specific education and training requirements, including a master’s degree or higher in psychotherapy or a related field, along with supervised clinical experience.
  • Psychotherapists are authorized to practice the controlled act of psychotherapy, which involves treating psychosocial or emotional difficulties through a therapeutic relationship.
  • Other regulated professionals who can use the title “psychotherapist” include psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses, and physicians, provided they have the appropriate training in psychotherapy

Counselor:

  • The title “counselor” is not a regulated profession in Ontario. Anyone can use this unprotected title without specific education or training requirements.
  • Counselors may provide general advice, guidance, or support. Still, they cannot practice the controlled act of psychotherapy unless they are also registered as a psychotherapist or another regulated professional authorized to do so.
  • Counselors cannot bill insurance companies for psychotherapy services in Ontario unless they hold a regulated designation that allows them to do so.

In summary, a psychotherapist in Ontario is a regulated professional with specific training in psychotherapy, while a counselor is an unregulated title that does not necessarily imply the same level of education, training, or scope of practice.

When is the time to contact a psychotherapist?

In general, seeking therapy is recommended when you’re experiencing emotional distress, relationship issues, trauma, addiction, or other mental health concerns that are impacting your daily functioning and quality of life. Early intervention can help prevent issues from worsening over time.

How do I work?

Psychotherapy is primarily talk-based therapy and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being.

The first session usually begins with assessing symptoms and behaviors that often interrupt the social life, personal relationships, academic or work activities, and physical health.

The therapy will include but is not limited to the following:

  • I will listen to your concerns, allow you to express feelings, and identify thoughts, feelings, behaviors, or circumstances interfering with meeting your goals.
  • I will support you in setting goals and developing concrete action plans for managing or overcoming the obstacles to your well-being and identifying strengths and resources.

As an integrative and focused psychotherapist, I draw on a variety of different theoretical orientations, approaches, and techniques in my work with clients offering them a service accurate to their needs. We will work collaboratively. I will provide you with relevant information, verbally, and/or in handout form to help you gain insight into your concerns.
